Fakty
The name Mörtelek simply means "mortar game" and the village is mentioned as a border village already in the introduction to the Ten-Heards Act recorded around 1300 but with older origins. Its history probably goes back to Viking times. Frälsegården, including the mill, has a long and interesting history of ownership. Several well-known noble families have held the farm since the High Middle Ages; Trolle, Bååt, Bonde, Bielke and others. In 1545 Mörtelek was one of the largest villages in the parish with a tax farm, a salvation farm, two farms belonging to Växjö Cathedral and a parish church. The old village lay with the farms close together as a row village west of the river and north of the river bend at Petersborg. The land that was created when Sandsjön was lowered was parceled out in 1854-1856. In 1851 a small brickworks was established on the village's land and the ruins remain in the pasture northeast of the homestead park. Within the village and in the outlying area there have been 12 crofts, 11 cottages, an earth ball and the soldier's cottage Petersborg.
Parking
There is a parking space nearby the hembygdsgård. It is about 50 meter walk from the parking space on a gravel road.
