This is Lenhovda’s hembygdsgård and a field of graves from the iron age. Some say that this is the most beautiful burial ground in all Småland! There are about 170 graves here, but the area north of the hembygdsgård used to be a part of the burial ground so there is at least 300 graves in the whole area. This indicates that Lenhovda was a central place during the iron ages. Have a look around and look at the many stone settings. The cairns are also graves and are made around 1800-500 B.C.E. The other graves are a bit younger and were probably made around 500 B.C.E. to C.E. 1000.
A hembygdsgård is a place where locals together have collected buildings to make sure they are preserved for the next generations. There is over a thousand hembygdsgårdar in Sweden but they’re all different! That’s because the locals want to preserve buildings and traditions that are unique for their region. The first building that were moved to the hembygdsgård was the Soldattorp from Blankadal. It was built during the second part of 1700’ and were moved here during the 1930’. On most of the building can you find information in Swedish about the houses and who lived there.

During the Iron Age, it was most common to burn the dead together with all kinds of grave goods, things that people thought they might need in the afterlife. One of the graves, a stone circle, has been investigated. In addition to burnt bones of the deceased, fragments of iron objects and glass beads were found. The grave goods showed that the grave was built in the 10th century.
The large number of graves means that there was one or more farms somewhere nearby. Traces of a settlement have been found just north of the burial ground, at Gripgård. During the Iron Age, people lived mainly from herding and farming. The field and meadow were adjacent to the farm. The forest was used as pasture.

There is a parking space close to the hembygdsgård.

Drive to Lenhovda and drive past the school on the road called Kyrkogatan. Look for a white sign that says “Hembygdsgård”. Follow that road for 200 meter and then turn right. There is a small sign that shows the way but it can be a bit hard to see.
