Omschrijving
Fairy mill is a collective name in folklore research for remains or natural formations to which special beliefs are attached. By sacrificing coins or greasing the river mill with fat, certain benefits could be achieved. It could be that you avoided diseases or became free from disease. It was often a matter of keeping in touch with the "invisible".
Sometimes the mill was a natural pit or crevice in a stone or rock. Sometimes an existing bowl pit was used, i.e. rock carving from the Bronze Age/Iron Age. In this case, a small 'giant pot' was used, formed when the inland ice melted away. Here at Toftaholm, sacrifices were made in the river mill to ensure a good harvest. An inventory in 1950 found 19 coins in the pit, the coins were from the 1940s.
