The right of public access is the foundation of the wonderful opportunity that allows us to move freely in the countryside, pick berries and mushrooms, and camp almost anywhere in the great outdoors. It belongs to us all and welcomes both the experienced hiker in hiking boots and those who prefer trainers. It is quite simply a gift – whatever the activity, the countryside does us good.

The right of public access entails both rights and responsibilities and is based on a shared responsibility that we fulfil by showing consideration for animals, nature, landowners and other people. By being aware of what is appropriate to do in the countryside and finding out how we should behave during different activities, in different seasons and in different places, we look after and safeguard the right of public access. That makes it easy to do the right thing!

There are certain things you should bear in mind depending on what you want to do. For example, when cycling, camping, lighting a fire, climbing or picking flowers. At certain times of the year, we need to be extra careful to protect wildlife, especially when they have their young. Some activities permitted under the right of public access can have a particularly significant impact on sensitive areas during certain periods. There may also be specific rules for certain areas.

As long as we exercise our right of public access, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities in Sweden.
