Storåns Kanotled

Storån – a 44 km canoe trail
Paddle through leafy surroundings starting at Håkansnäs in the north to Lake
Bolmen in the south. Storån canoe trail is just over 44 km and flows through
varied nature of forests, meadows, old pastures and wetlands.

NOTE! Temporary limited access

The heat has meant that the water levels in the upper part of Storån are
low, limiting accessibility. There are also trees that have fallen across the
river and are difficult to pass.

Three rest areas along the trail

There are three rest areas along the river that are equipped with wind
shelters, picnic tables, composting toilets, firewood and waste bins. The rest
areas are at Fänestad, Kvarnagården in Forsheda and Slättö mill.

Lifts along the trail

There are a number of lifts along the Storån canoe trail. One is at
Kvarnagården in Forsheda, with a carrying distance of 130 metres in easily
accessible terrain. In Slättö there is a lift before the bridge at Slättö mill,
on the left-hand side. The lift covers roughly 150 metres as you walk on the
left of the river, on a road/footpath below the old dam.

There may be fallen trees along the trail over which it may be necessary
to lift canoes.

See rare animals and plants

With
a bit of luck, you may see rare animals and plants such as the curlew and
pasqueflower. The landscape also has an exciting history with prehistoric
graves, rune stones and historical landmarks from ancient times. The water
flows calmly, except for the final stretch as you paddle along the edge of Lake
Bolmen. River Storån is also part of the Lagaleden trail and features a
meandering flow, levees and mires, sand deposits several metres deep, coves and
headland. Adjacent to the canoe trail is Slättö Sand, also known as ‘Småland’s
Sahara’, one of Sweden’s largest inland drift sand fields.
