Omschrijving

In 1906, the courthouse, designed by the master builder John Johnsson from Värnamo, was completed. The Stockholm architects Jens Carlsen and Carl Nyrén, a native of Jönköping, won an architectural contest with a proposed design for a new town hall in Värnamo. It was built in two stages in 1959 and 1968. The building was opened in 1970.

Before the town hall was erected, there were several small buildings here. They were called the “Locomotive”, since they were lined up like a train with its coaches. The Locomotive housed Värnamo’s first chemist’s and first bank, Wernamo Sparbank, and the grocery store Fingal Carlssons Speceriaffär. In the first coach, there was a tailor’s and later a tourist office. The second coach housed the café Maja’s kafé, run by Maria Svensson.

Värnamo church has been in the same location, but in different forms, since the Middle Ages. The present church building was inaugurated in 1875.

Feiten

This sign is part of the town history walk “Pinnapå”. The whole route is around 5 km and includes 12 signs. Pinnapå is part of “Värnamo – Tales of Our Town”, a historical exhibition in the cultural centre Gummifabriken, housed in Värnamo’s ancient rubber factory.

The signs are designed by Gro Knutsen and are inspired by spindle-back chairs (pinnstolar), a famous cultural heritage from Värnamo. (Hence the name Pinnapå, which means to walk on at a steady pace.)
