Omschrijving
The last execution in Värnamo took place in the morning of 13 January 1836, when Petter Kuno was beheaded as a punishment for murdering his wife with an axe. In 1766, the farmhand Per Erlandsson was sentenced to beheading for the double murder of a shepherd boy and a shepherdess. In 1642, the maid Karin Nilsdotter was executed for the murder of a child.
No one knows for sure how many people lost their lives at the execution place in Värnamo, a site featuring a tall gallows whose silhouette stood out against the sky as a deterrent to people travelling on the Jönköping road. Investigations have shown that the gallows was most likely located on Bangårdsgatan level with the railway depot, now industrial buildings.

This sign is part of the town history walk “Pinnapå”. The whole route is around 5 km and includes 12 signs. Pinnapå is part of “Värnamo – Tales of Our Town”, a historical exhibition in the cultural centre Gummifabriken, housed in Värnamo’s ancient rubber factory.
The signs are designed by Gro Knutsen and are inspired by spindle-back chairs (pinnstolar), a famous cultural heritage from Värnamo. (Hence the name Pinnapå, which means to walk on at a steady pace.)
