Information board number 1 tells about Biskopsgruvan

Biskopsgruvan is the oldest mine in the area. People searched for iron here and probably also found silver. This enabled the first silver mine to be opened in Sala. There are records of mining as early as the 13th century. But what is certain is that the Bishop's Mine was mined in 1305 under the leadership of Bishop Kettilson-Whide in Västerås. Since the Church had enormous power in the Middle Ages, the bishop himself could seize all the silver.
