Stalotomter på Rödingsfjället

A beautiful plateau in the middle of the mountains where there are several remains of Stalo sites.

The Stalo plots are located on this plateau. A so-called stalotomte (hut site) right next to the path was excavated in 1978. It was unusually large, 15 x 13 m with an oval shape. No hearth was observed in the center of the plot and no finds were recovered. Therefore there is nothing that can date it. Unfortunately, no smaller plots in the vicinity were investigated, which probably had fireplaces.

About 6 km after the road barrier a small privately owned house is reached. The house, which was built by the defense, stands in roughly the same place as the border post of the emergency years. Insulators for an old telephone line from this time can still be seen screwed into older mountain birches along the path.

DESCRIPTION

When you hike the trail towards Rödingsfjället, after about 4 km you reach a plateau where the ground is almost completely flat. From here you can see in the west the remains of a large glacier up on Olfjället, Sami Ulevuole. Sámi Nils Matias Andersson's well-known joik "The reindeer herd on Ulevuole" has its plot from here:
