Kristinehamns kommun
Välkommen till Kristinehamns fantastiska natur ...
The peninsula is a valuable area for wildlife due to its large deciduous tree population and its wealth of older trees and pastures with varying degrees of openness.
From May 1, there may be cows grazing on the land in the nature reserve. Please show consideration for the animals and do not bring your dog into the pastures.
Värmlands Säby has a variety of habitat types such as: broadleaf forests, pastures, deciduous swamp forests, dry meadows and coastal meadows. Large parts of the peninsula offer an old and very attractive cultural landscape that is still largely used today. Extensive areas consist of old pastures or older overgrown pastures where pure hardwood stands and often wide-crowned old oaks coexist.
The peninsula is also located within one of Sweden's most de Geer moraine-dense areas.
The Värmlands Säby nature reserve was established to preserve and manage the area's grazed oak pastures and natural forests. The area is also intended to promote outdoor recreation and be a suitable location for resting and nesting wetland birds. The area is of national interest and is part of the EU's network of protected nature, Natura 2000, and is within the Kilsviken RAMSAR area (wetland of international importance).
Värmlands Säby has a very rich bird life, many insect species and many lichen species. In addition to bird species such as the lesser spotted woodpecker, stonechat and nuthatch, the old broadleaf trees are home to many wood-living insects whose long-term existence in the country is considered to be threatened. Many threatened and rare species are dependent on old deciduous trees for their survival, and the sun-exposed and deeply furrowed bark of the old oaks supports a very rich lichen flora with the presence of several threatened species.
In the old pastures there is a rich grove flora with elements of southern species such as tooth root, musk madder, big rush and nunwort.
An approximately 5.5 kilometer marked trail is located in the northern part of the reserve. About 2 kilometers of this route is round trip from parking to the reserve boundary. There is an information board at the parking lot and the entrance to the reserve and a couple of rest areas along the trail.
The trails go through pastures. It is not appropriate to bring dogs into the pastures.
