Stora Vilången, Naturreservat

This natural forest is a small gem in a managed forest landscape. In this reserve, you can experience old-growth forest along the shores of Vilången and on its islands.

Here you can hike along the shores of Stora Vilången. The islets and headlands by the lake are home to really big, centuries-old pine trees. The oldest and most natural forest is found on Rutön and on small islets in the coastal marshes. On the two islands, Storön and Rutön, there are also a few very old dry oaks, some of which are impressive for the area.

Lake Stora Vilången makes up 85 of the reserve's 108 hectares. It is a nutrient-poor clear water lake located 126 meters above sea level.

The former Domän reserve from 1939 became a nature reserve in 2004. The purpose of the reserve is to preserve and develop the natural forest character in parts of the reserve and maintain the beautiful landscape at Stora Vilången.

Traces of three Stone Age settlements have been found within the reserve. Several flints and flint flakes have been found in connection with the settlements.

Animals and plants

The old pine trees are in various stages of decomposition and are therefore important for many rare insects and birds.

The area is home to unusual lichens and fungi, such as: short bearded lichen, shrill lichen, sticky tick, violet tick, lichen tick and birch tick.

Lake Stora Vilången is of regional interest from a fishing point of view. Sampling shows that Stora Vilången also has a very rich bottom fauna.
