Norra Lien, Naturreservat

The area has a high botanical and zoological value, providing habitats for a large number of wood-boring insects as well as cryptogams such as lichens, mosses and fungi.

Norra Lien is a varied and hilly landscape section at 220-320 meters above sea level, with coniferous forest, pine forest, swamp forest and small lakes and marshes. The area has a large number of deciduous trees, mainly in the form of old aspen and birch. Several small streams run through the area.

The reserve was established to preserve the valuable natural environment with shaded heath areas, deciduous trees, bog mosaics with wooded bog islands, old and late-growing trees and dead wood. The aim is also to increase public access and to create conditions for the conservation of rare species.

In the past, the area has been used for farming and the reserve is directly adjacent to Nordlisätern.

Animals and plants

On the slopes of the rift valleys grows coarse-stemmed, largely natural spruce forest, with a rich presence of dead wood and a number of signal and endangered species, such as the wood-living mosses wood bustard, long-limbed moss and purple mylia, as well as the wood-living insects bronze lion, giant sponge moth, lesser marrowbore, prickly pear and birch woodborer (gnawing traces and hatching holes).

The reserve is also of great value to the bird fauna through its rich variety of habitats, which provides special conditions as a habitat, for example for capercaillie. Woodchip marks also show that three-toed woodpeckers forage here, to take advantage of the abundance of wood-living insects.
