Beskrivelse
An unusual mire with a rich wildlife and rare plants where the spruce branches are draped with beard-like hanging lichens and fallen tree trunks are overgrown with soft moss mats. In the area there is a nice hiking trail that takes you up to the top of Storberget.
In the Horsstomyren-Storberget nature reserve, you can walk through Storberget's diverse coniferous forests, where the spruce branches are draped with beard-like hanging lichens and fallen tree trunks are overgrown with soft moss mats.
You can also visit the shapely Horsstomyren bog with sloping marshes, muddy loose bottoms and marsh areas with strands and flakes.
The reserve is protected to preserve the bog complex and the coniferous forest with its structures and plant and animal communities, and to make the area accessible to visitors. The area is part of the EU's ecological network of protected areas, Natura 2000.
Animals and plants
The variety of habitats in the reserve means that many different species are found here. For example, the marsh is home to meadow keys, grass wool, marsh roll, dwarf lammergeier, bear's broom and snipe. Horsstomyren is considered to have one of the county's largest populations of marsh lilies. The protected wolf lichen is found on dead pines in the northwestern part of the bog. The marsh's more notable birdlife includes cranes, bitterns, greenlegs and woodcock, snipe and teal.
In the damp forest environment on the mountain slopes, unusual lichens and fungi grow on the old, late-growing trees, such as long brook nettle, violet-grey thorn lichen, twine lichen, lung lichen, hull lichen, border lichen and scented lichen. Lichen jays, capercaillie and three-toed woodpecker thrive in the unbroken forest landscape. Black grouse and red grouse are also found in the area.
The most common mammals are moose, hare and fox, but pine marten, lynx and bear also roam the area.
Before your visit
From Långbergets Sporthotell's parking lot there are two different trails into the reserve. In the reserve there is a shorter one, via Storberget; 4.5 km, and a longer trail, via Storberget and Horsstomyren; 10.2 km. If you hike from Långberget and only around Horsstomyren and back, the total trail distance is 5.7 km. The reserve map shows the route of the trails. The trails are mainly easy to hike and are mostly tracked where there is marshland. The reserve map also shows where the reserve's information is posted.
