Handlinger

Beskrivelse

Hyperite mountains with sweeping views, interesting flora and insect fauna. Along the shore of Lake Rottnen there are several picnic areas.

The trail is closed

As a result of the drought in 2018 and subsequent bark beetle infestation

there are currently many spruces that have died in the nature reserve. Many of the trees have now collapsed and access is difficult and dangerous.

We have therefore chosen to close the trail to Gettjärnsklätten until we can clear the trees.

Closed trail

We have decided to close the trail temporarily because of the numbers of fallen trees. It is difficult and dangerous to walk in the area right now.

The steep mountainside of the reserve area rises about 200 meters above the surface of Lake Rottnen. The horizontal distance between the shore and the crest is about 500 meters. The cliff dominates the surrounding landscape. The view from the crest is miles across the Rottna Valley.

The reserve was established to preserve the area's distinctive and unique vegetation. The area is part of the EU's network of valuable nature, Natura 2000.

Animals and plants

Below the cliff on an approximately 250 meter wide "shelf" in the terrain, the plant conditions are favorable and the vegetation is species-rich and lush. Deciduous trees of various species are present, mostly ash and lime, but there are also elm and maple.

There are about ten fern species, including forked and black bracken, as well as a number of pea plants such as sweet woodruff, lesser celandine, creeping pea, spring pea and wood vetch. Other uncommon plants include bloodwort, dwarf horsetail, woodruff, knotweed and witch hazel.

The rich flora benefits wildlife. The butterfly fauna in particular has attracted interest with, among other things, the panther moth and the red-striped earthfly. The bird fauna is also rich and includes raven and nuthatch, as well as woodpeckers such as the green wren, the woodpecker and the lesser spotted woodpecker. Among the smaller birds, green warblers, warblers, garden warblers, blackcaps and rosefinches contribute to the concert.

Before your visit

There is an information sign and dry toilet at the parking lot. There is a rest area with a fireplace by Lake Rottnen, not far from the parking lot.

The hiking trail that takes you up the cliff is mostly closed due to the risk of falling trees. The view cannot be reached safely at the moment. The circular trail below the cliff is also closed until further notice.
