Beskrivelse
The terrain is sharply undulating and the canyon-like cuts contribute to the wilderness character of the area.
The area has a valuable mix of natural forest-like old deciduous fires, swamp forests and wetlands, as well as young forests with remnant coarse deciduous trees. The presence of old natural forest-like stands, old rough deciduous trees and a rich occurrence of dead wood means that the area constitutes a very favorable habitat for many species that are declining in the managed forest landscape. A number of forest fires have affected the area and in several places traces can be seen in the form of fire stumps, pine trees with fire sounds and charcoal residues in the ground layer.
The reserve was established to preserve an example of the forest landscape's diversity of biotopes and species.
Animals and plants
In the older forest stands there is a species-rich leaf lichen community with abundant occurrences of western kidney lichen, lung lichen and hull lichen.
Within the area, 13 rare species of wood-dwelling beetles have been found. Two of the species have not previously been found in Värmland. Several species of woodpecker found in Sweden are present in the area. There is also at least one playground for capercaillie, as well as a relatively good presence of wolverine and grouse. Other species, in addition to woodpeckers and grouse, are barn owls, barn owls and barn owls.

The reserve is located in Värmlands län, Årjäng municipality, about 8 kilometers north of Karlanda church. Exit the E18 in Årjäng and drive north on road 172 towards Vännacka. When you reach Vännacka (about 18 kilometers), turn left on road 177. After about 3.5 kilometers on it, turn left again, onto a gravel road with a sign for "Håltebyn". Follow the "main road" west through Håltebyn, and after about 4 kilometers the road splits at the southern tip of Lake Rinnens. Keep left here, and after 400 meters turn left again. Follow this last stretch for about 3 kilometers to the end of the road, and park in the turning area in the nature reserve (about halfway into this last stretch of road, there is a turn-off to the right, but do not turn in there). NOTE! The road may sometimes be closed by a barrier.
Forskrifter
It is prohibited to:
- capture, disturb or injure mammals, birds, frogs and reptiles, as well as damage their nests and breeding sites or collect eggs
- bring dogs that are not kept on a leash
- driving off-road vehicles or riding horses
- collecting invertebrates such as beetles and land snails
- damaging or removing trees and shrubs, including dead wood such as dry trees or dry branches
- collecting mosses, lichens and wood fungi
- setting fires
- damaging or removing natural objects or surface formation or damaging the ground cover
- pitching tents, hiding places or similar
- marking out tracks, organizing orienteering checks or holding competitions
- putting up a board, sign, inscription, poster or similar.
Without the permission of the county administrative board, it is forbidden to:
- organized use of the area (tourism, teaching, etc.).
