Vallonsmedjan i Österbybruk

Österbybruk – A cultural center in a beautiful, historic ironworks setting! The Dannemora mine nearby provided conditions for a more than 500 year long uninterrupted tradition of iron industry at Österbybruk During summer there are guided tours of the Walloon forge and one of the old blacksmith’s dwelling.

The guided tour tells the story of how it all started and how the blacksmiths from Wallonia came to refine the art of forging to make iron and steel from Österbybruk sought-after in large parts of the world. During the tour, you will visit the only surviving and working Walloon forge and learn about forging techniques and working conditions. The tours ends with a visit to the 18th century blacksmith’s dwelling with tales from the life and times of the blacksmiths.
