In Tierp municipality between the villages of Bolstan and Vad lies the Bolstan-Vad nature reserve, a dreamland for mushroom lovers. Here you can pick a basket full of delicious edible mushrooms and study many others that are not as food-friendly. The reserve is home to around 80 rare mushrooms that are listed as species worthy of protection.

The nature in the area consists of coniferous forest, here and there mixed with occasional deciduous trees. The soil is rich in lime, which favors many herbs and fungi. Among the fungi are rare thorny fungi such as bitter, copper, blue-footed, cracked and rough thorn fungi. And it's also home to the rare fiddlehead fern. Look out for the witch's rings, a special growth habit where the mushrooms grow in a continuous circle.

Old fences remind us that people used to live here and graze their animals in the forest. Parts of Bolstan-Vad have now been fenced off again and the forest is grazed by cattle. The animals' trampling in the fields creates good conditions for the fungi.

There are also other traces of people in the reserve in the form of old tar pits. The tar pit is the oldest known method of extracting tar. The method was in use from the Iron Age until the 19th century.

The reserve is located about 1 km east of the small village of Bolstan. Follow the road signs from Västland church on road 740;

In the reserve it is forbidden to:

dig, hoe or otherwise damage the soil surface
break branches, fell or otherwise damage living or dead trees or shrubs
collect mosses, fungi or lichens, except for

the gathering of edible mushrooms
collecting single fruiting bodies of soil fungi or small collections of mosses and lichens for species identification purposes, provided that the County Administrative Board is informed of the findings.

collect or remove insects or other invertebrates
deliberately disturbing wildlife,
make a fire or barbecue in a place other than one specially prepared by the County Administrative Board,
bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet,
drive a motorized vehicle except for driving on roads and parking lots,
set up a motorized vehicle, caravan or trailer or similar,
put up permanent markings, signs or similar,
without the permission of the County Administrative Board, use the area for organized competitions or exercises, riding or camp activities or the like.
