Have you ever noticed that the Dalälven flows in the wrong direction? The river used to flow into Lake Mälaren, but at some point during the last ice age the river channel filled up again. Now the Dalälven makes an unnatural bend east of Avesta, changes direction and instead heads north again, out to Gävle Bay. Instead of a stream where the water has worn down over thousands of years, the last stretch of the river is in many places made up of branches and lakes that enclose islets and headlands. One such area is Båtfors nature reserve. The forest has been flooded by the river for centuries, and along the banks stand moisture-resistant aspens and stately oaks.
The terrain is rocky and the old forest in the area is wild and difficult to access. There are no prepared paths here. However, there are plenty of animals and plants to look at for those who are interested. Bring a map and compass or GPS and sturdy shoes if you want to explore the area. The water in the rapids is regulated, which means that the water level can change very quickly. Be careful if you venture onto the islands.
Båtforstorpet is located in the reserve and can be rented for overnight stays. NOTE! The road down to Båtforstorpet is blocked at Hyttön, 4 km from the reserve. It is not possible to park at the barrier.

You can take the county bus to Båtfors, stop Fiskgjusevägen. Look west on the bathing road about 400 m and you will arrive at the bathing area and its parking lot. Bus numbers and timetables can be found at www.ul.se.

Forskrifter
In the reserve it is forbidden to:
- dig, hoe or otherwise damage the ground surface
- break branches, cut down or otherwise damage living or dead trees and shrubs,
- digging up or picking flowers, grasses, mosses, fungi, lichens or otherwise removing or damaging plants or plant parts of any kind, with the exception of picking edible mushrooms, fruit and berries
- capture, kill or remove vertebrates, remove eggs, eggs or nests or otherwise deliberately disturb wildlife
- collecting or removing insects or other invertebrates
- bring an unleashed dog or other stray pet
- burn or grill other than in a place prepared by the County Administrative Board,
- use a sound system in a disruptive manner,
- drive or set up a motorized vehicle,
- land with an aircraft,
- travel by boat, canoe or other waterborne craft in the area marked on decision map 2, appendix D Pdf, 8.6 MB.,
- without the permission of the County Administrative Board, moor a boat, canoe or other vessel for longer than 24 hours,
- use the area for organized competition or training purposes, riding or camp activities,
- put up a board, poster, poster, sign or make an inscription.
