St:Nicolai Sunnan ån, kyrkan som glömdes bort

In the mid-14th century, the city was expanded with a district on the south side of the river comprising two long streets, Storgatan and Trädgårdsgatan. The river was a dividing line for different dioceses where the north side of the river was in Västerås and the south in Strängnäs. It is unusual for a city to be divided into different dioceses. A church is built south of the river and consecrated to St. Nicholas, the saint of sailors and merchants. Gustav Vasa allowed the church to continue to operate until 1545, when the two dioceses on the north and south sides were merged, and at the same time the church silver was confiscated for the crown. It was then demolished and disappeared so thoroughly that it was forgotten for 400 years. It was not until 1964 that the remains of the church were discovered during an excavation. They found graves, the churchyard and an extensive fire deposit of molten glass and metal.
