Konsterud södra domänreservat, Naturreservat

Some lichen-covered dry trees of impressive size are found in the reserve.

The area consists largely of a mountain ridge with grand-dominated coniferous forest which, due to thin soil cover with rock in the day, is relatively patchy in the central, highest parts. In the gaps there are a total of about fifty old large pines and some birch. The pines are 150-200 years old, and several of them have a breast height diameter of around 70 centimeters. The spruce forest in the area is also old. Some of the old spruces have an abundant growth of fertile old spruce lichen as far as 8-10 meters up the trunk. In the central, older parts of the area, there is a good supply of spruce logs of larger dimensions.

The nature reserve is originally an old domain reserve. The area was set aside by the Royal Domain Board in the 1940s and 1950s with the aim of preserving "a relic of old-time forests" and an area with really old pines and spruces that now exist only as very small fragments in an otherwise heavily used forest landscape.

The Södra Konsterud nature reserve was established to protect and preserve a natural forest biotope in the south-eastern part of Värmland that has not been affected by rational forestry in recent times. The aim is also to preserve biodiversity in the area, such as mosses and lichens that are unusual and rare in the county. In 1999, the nature reserve was reorganized with the County Administrative Board as the principal when the ownership structure of the forestry company changed.
