When the ice sheet melted away, the ground was so depressed that the sea lapped only a few kilometers from the reserve area in the Ammerån valley. It is the moraine deposits of the ice that make up the area's ground cover. In the dominant pine forest there are many trees with traces of fire. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences examined one of these fire-damaged trees and was able to provisionally date the fires to 1820 and 1847. The pine forest, which is partly natural and late-growing, also has an admixture of broadleaf trees dominated by spruce. The mix of different habitats means that many uncompetitive species thrive.

The easiest way to get to the nature reserve is by car. From Östersund follow road 87 towards Sollefteå. Just 18 kilometers after Stugun turn left onto road 344 towards Överammer. Turn immediately left again onto a graveled forest road. Follow the gravel road for about 6 kilometers, then you are in Eldsjöbäckens nature reserve. Total driving distance Östersund - Eldsjöbäcken is about 76 kilometers.

Welcome to Eldsjöbäcken. Keep in mind that within the reserve it is not allowed to:
- pick and collect species of various kinds, with the exception of berries and edible mushrooms,
- damage the ground, boulders, vegetation, dry trees or other dead wood,
- climbing trees, staying near a bird of prey's nest, lair or burrow, collecting animals or otherwise deliberately harming or disturbing wildlife
- make fires, other than with firewood
- driving a motorized vehicle off-road.
Other rules apply if you want to conduct any kind of activity in the area, see the relevant reserve decision for full regulations. There may also be other laws to take into account, such as the Reindeer Husbandry Act.
