Beskrivelse
In Gassbo, you can enjoy a relatively untouched environment with plenty of old trees that have high natural values. A large number of red-listed species have been found in the old beech forest.
In Gassbo, old beech forest grows in a hilly terrain that slopes down towards Gassboån, which flows into Lake Stora Färgen. The beech forest has elements of uneven-aged aspen, birch, alder, spruce, pine and oak. There are deciduous and mixed swamp forests in the hollows.
Dead wood important for many
The forest has not been affected much by forestry in recent decades, which has meant that there is plenty of coarse dead wood. The wood is an important habitat for many different fungi and wood-living insects. Around 50 red-listed species, mainly lichens and mosses, have been found in the area. Some examples are small lichen, mealy lichen, pink lichen, lung lichen and beech feather moss.
Remains of an old croft
In the northern part of the reserve, there was still open arable land in the 1950s after an old croft. Façade paths probably ran west through the forest. There was also a charcoal pit, a coal oven and a tar coking plant near the reserve. The westernmost parts of the reserve consist of old bog plantations that were open well into the 20th century.

Public transportation: Bus stop "Älmeliden" located about 1 km north of the reserve.Car: From Hyltebruk take towards Unnaryd. Pass Färgaryd and the bridge. After 2.5 km there is a road to the right towards Gassbo. Parking is available when you enter the reserve. GPS (WGS84): Lat N 56° 58' 38" Lon E 13° 22' 59" (parking lot)
Forskrifter
To protect the nature reserve, the County Administrative Board has decided on special regulations, including those that you as a visitor to the area must follow and respect.
In addition to what applies under other legislation, it is forbidden to:
- damage living or dead standing or lying trees and shrubs and damage the vegetation in general, e.g. by digging up plants,
- catch or collect invertebrates without the permission of the County Administrative Board
- erecting a board, poster, poster, sign or making an inscription
- digging or otherwise destroying or damaging a fixed natural object or surface formation,
- bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet,
- without the permission of the County Administrative Board, organize competitions or other activities that may cause soil wear or may disturb wildlife,
- and to conduct scientific studies that contravene the regulations without the permission of the County Administrative Board.
