Beskrivelse
The channel consists of two islands in Lake Hjälmaren, which are connected by an approximately 100-metre-long unvegetated gravel and sand bar. The position of the bar varies depending on which direction the wind has been blowing most recently. Rich bird life. The Fåran nature reserve is accessible by boat, has fine sandy beaches and is a popular bathing island. Dry toilets and barbecue areas are available on both the northern and southern islands, but camping is only permitted for two nights on the southern island, Yttre Fåran. The reserve is part of Natura 2000, which is the EU's network for valuable nature.

Forskrifter
In the nature reserve it is forbidden to:
- deliberately disturbing wildlife
- bring an unleashed dog or other stray animal
- make a fire other than in specially designated places
- break branches, cut down or otherwise damage living or dead trees and shrubs, or damage vegetation by digging up herbs, grasses, mosses or lichens
- camping other than in a designated place and for longer than two days
- putting up a board, poster, placard, sign, inscription or similar device
- use a radio, tape recorder, musical instrument or similar device in a disruptive manner
