The physician Urban Hjärne discovered the health spring of Djurgårdsbrunn in the 1690s. In 1742 it was opened to the public. The golden period as a health spa was during the 1830s and 1840s. Many of the buildings were associated with the drinking of the water, and other activities that were offered to the guests.
