Beskrivelse

There are no marked trails in Tollaskogen. Instead, a visit to the nature reserve becomes an adventure where you can discover a natural forest with an exciting insect life on your own.

Leafy dispersal corridor

Tollaskogen is named after the Toll family who once owned the land. The area has had a varied history as both beech forest and grazed pasture. The current forest began to grow when the cattle stopped grazing and the farmer no longer cultivated the land. Tollaskogen is an important forest area that can act as a dispersal corridor for animals and plants between the forested northern slope of Nävlingeåsen and the Helgeån oak landscape.

Tollaskogen is an exciting mixed deciduous forest. In the damp parts, swamp forest grows with coarse alders on strong plinths. In other parts, beech, oak and pine grow. The oldest trees are around 130 years old.

Dead wood with high natural values

The varied natural forest has high natural values. The 5-6 mm long oak brown beetle is one of many wood-dwelling species that can be found on dead or dying trees. It lives in coarse oak stumps, especially in wood infested with the fungus rust ear. The beautiful red oxtongue fungus can also be found on old dying oaks in the area.

Wooded pastures

In the far south are wooded pastures where animals graze among flowering shrubs and old oaks.

Welcome to Tollaskogen Nature Reserve

There are no marked trails in Tollaskogen. A visit to the nature reserve is instead an adventure where you will discover a natural forest with an interesting insect life all on your own.

From pasture to woodland

Tollaskogen was given its name after the Toll family who once owned the land. The area has had a varied history as both a beech forest and a grazed pasture land. The current forest began to emerge when the cattle stopped grazing and the farmers stopped cultivating the land. Tollaskogen is an important area of forest that can serve as a dispersal corridor for animals and plants between Nävlingeåsen's forested northern slope and Helgeån's oak woodlands.

Varied deciduous forest

Today Tollaskogen is an exciting deciduous forest. The wetland forest is dominated by common alder. In other parts beech, oak and pine grows. The oldest trees are around 130 years old. The forest has high biodiversity due to its rich variety in tree species. The beetle hypulus quercinus which is 5 to 6 mm long is one of many species that is depending on dead wood. It lives in dead oak trees, especially dead wood infested with Oak Curtain Crust fungus (Hymenochaete rubiginosa). In the old dying oak trees in the area, you can also find the beautiful Red Beefsteak fungus.

Far to the south lie wooded pastures where animals graze amongst flowering shrubs and old oak trees.
