Beskrivelse

Svedberga Hill is a green oasis in the flat agricultural landscape. The highest point is 62 meters above sea level and from here you have a view of the vast surroundings. During the winter months, there are good chances of seeing eagles in the area. Below the hill is one of Skåne's largest ash trees.

View of the agricultural landscape

Svedberga Hill was formed when the ice sheet retreated from southern Sweden. The hill is a single large mound of gravel and sand formed by glacial deposits. Windswept boulders can be found here and the coastline from the highest levels of the sea can be seen in the landscape. The highest point is 62 meters above sea level and from the top you look out over a landscape characterized by agriculture. In winter, Svedberga hill is also the area's best toboggan run.

From field to pasture to forest

The hill was cultivated early on due to the light and sandy soils. On the top of the hill, ancient cairns have been found - traces of some of the earliest cultivation. However, the heavy and stiff clay of the plain was difficult to farm and was used instead for mowing and grazing. It was not until the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that the clay plain could be farmed. This meant that the hill's fields were abandoned and became pasture instead. Eventually, forest was planted on large parts of the hill.

Today's coniferous forest is gradually being replaced by deciduous forest, while the former pastures are being recreated. Below the hill in the southeast is also one of Skåne's largest ash trees. In the northwestern parts, you are met by open areas with heather vegetation.

Outdoor life

In the reserve there are plenty of walking trails and picnic areas. There is also a bridle path. Do not miss the view from the top or the old ash tree southeast of the top. There are several parking lots along the western border of the reserve. Remember to take your rubbish home.

In English

Welcome to Svedberga kulle Nature Reserve

Svedberga Kulle (Svedberga Hill) is a green oasis for both humans and animals in the middle of an otherwise flat and cultivated landscape. You can wander along gentle woodland paths and when you get to the top of the hill, as a reward, you get to enjoy a fantastic view of the Kulla Peninsula.

Expansive View

Svedberga Kulle was created when the inland ice sheet retreated from southern Sweden. The hill is an isolated mound of gravel and sand that was created by deposits from glacial melt-waters. The highest point is 62 metres above sea-level, from where you can look out over a landscape characterized by agriculture.

Easily Cultivated Hill

The sandy soil on the hill is easy to cultivate, and thus large parts of the hill were arable land until the middle of the 20th century. The heavy clay soil at the foot of the hill was hard to work and became instead hay meadows, damp marshes and treeless pasture. It was not until the great agricultural reforms when the villages were divided and Svedberga Farm was established that the clay soil was taken into cultivation.

In the eastern sections, there are the remains of ancient beech and wet broad-leaved woodland. In the north-western parts of the reserve, there are open areas with heather heath vegetation. The goal for the management of the nature reserve is to replace the replace the conifers and non-native broad-leaved trees with native broad-leaved species. There will also be pasture with trees and bushes.

An Oasis for both People and Animals

Svedberge Kulla is a green refuge for wild animals in the otherwise open cultivated landscape. The reserve is also a sanctuary for people to relax and wander in. You can stroll through the woodland, listen to the birds and, perhaps, catch sight of a roe deer among the undergrowth. In winter this is the best sledging hill in the area and there is a place where you can warm up by grilling sausages.

Regulations

The regulations which apply in the reserves are set out on the notices displayed at the entrances and in swedish on this web page.
