Beskrivelse
Näset is a municipal reserve located on a peninsula in Lake Osby. In addition to lake views, you will find grazed wet meadows and water-filled pits from diatomaceous earth mining. The area is popular with birds, but also with us humans thanks to its proximity to Osby. Here you can go hiking, bird watching, fishing, canoeing and ice skating in cold winters. You'll find barbecue areas, viewing towers and hiking trails in the area. The Skåneleden trail passes through the reserve.
Forest and open land
Näset is largely made up of moors, damp beach meadows that are regularly flooded, and moraine soil. After a long period without grazing, a sparse deciduous forest began to spread across the peninsula. Today the land has been restored and is kept open with the help of grazing animals.
Industrialized wetlands
Adjacent to the marshes are several ponds that are the remains of an older industrial activity. In the 1890s, diatomaceous earth, a type of soil formed by sedimented diatoms, was discovered on Näset and began to be mined commercially. The diatomaceous earth was crushed, sun-dried and ground into a fine-grained powder that had a variety of uses. Among other things, diatomaceous earth was used as a thermal insulator and polishing agent, in water purification filters and as a binding agent in dynamite. Even today, diatomaceous earth is used for all kinds of purposes, but mining at Näset ceased in the 1950s. Today, the pits have become valuable wetlands for plant and animal life.
Bird life in Lake Osby
The whole of the surrounding Osbysjön is designated a bird protection area. The lake's many islands and shores are home to a rich bird life. Several different ducks, geese and gulls thrive in Lake Osbysjön, as do species such as the curlew, grebe and cormorant.
Fishing opportunities
Fishing is free in Lake Osby and there are several suitable fishing spots on Näset. Here you can fish for zander, pike, perch, burbot, bream and trout.
Outdoor life
This reserve is good for outdoor recreation close to urban areas with many opportunities. There are hiking trails, barbecue areas, lookout towers, kayak / canoe opportunities and ice skating / cross-country skiing if it is a cold winter. In Osbysjön there are also opportunities for fishing. Skåneleden (SL1 coast to coast, stage 7) passes through the area. It is about 4 km walk from Osby station where trains and buses stop. There is a parking lot adjacent to the reserve. Remember to take your rubbish home.
