Beskrivelse
If bats and mysteries are your thing, Hallaröd should be able to satisfy you. Old oak and beech forests with hollow trees, sunny glades and lots of insects have created a paradise for 16 different species of bats! And many are the traces of the people before us. There are hollow ways from old carts and a 700-year-old slag heap from iron production. And then there's the mysterious memorial stone with the as yet unsolved inscription MTN - who erected it and why? The reserve has no paths but is easy to wander.
A bat forest
Beech and oak trees grow here alternately, interspersed with areas of deciduous swamp forest. And it has been like this for 200 years, probably longer. Although the oldest trees today are no more than 140 years old, there are plenty of hollow trees and dead wood - something that is appreciated by wood fungi, insects, hole-building birds and bats. In the hollow trees, the bats can seek shelter during the day and at night they hunt insects in the varied landscape. The management goal is a forest with trees of all ages - old, hollow giants next to small budding saplings - with sunny glades and flowering edges. It is the bats' favorite forest.
Hollow ways and secretive rocks
Humans have also enjoyed Hallaröd Forest for a long time. Over the years, our ancestors have left more or less clear traces in the form of hollow ways, cairns and a 700-year-old slag heap from iron production.
Then there is the mysterious memorial stone with the inscription "MTN". Who erected it and what does MTN stand for? No one knows.
Outdoor life
Parking is available. The reserve has no paths but is easy to walk in. Remember to take your trash home.
In English
Welcome to Hallaröd Nature Reserve
It's located in the heart of Skåne county.
Old broadleaved woodlands
The broadleaved woodlands at Hallaröd have a long history. They have grown here for centuries, even if they have changed character over the years. In the 1800s, the woodland in which the farmer's animals grazed was probably more open. Today the woodland is more dense and tall and used by 16 different species of bats!
A forest for bats
A mixture of oak and beech grow in the woodland, with patches of wet woodland in between. It has probably been like this for 200 years, possibly even longer. Even if the oldest tree now is not more than 140 years old, there are lots of holes and dead wood - something that is appreciated by wood-living fungi, insects, hole-nesting birds and bats. Bats seek protection in the holes in the trees and by night they hunt insects in the varied landscape. The management objective here is to have a woodland with trees of all ages; old, hollow giants alongside small seedlings, with sunny glades and flowering bushes. This is the bats' favorite woodland.
Cairns and mysterious stones
People have also long thrived in Hallaröd woodland. Through the years, our forefathers have left more or less obvious remains in the shape of sunken roads, clearance cairns and a more than 700 year old slag heap, the remains from iron production. There is also the mysterious memorial stone with the inscription MTN. Who put it there and what does MTN stand for? Nobody knows.
