Häckeberga Naturvårdsområde

Häckeberga nature conservation area is a large recreational area that encompasses Häckeberga Castle, Häckebergasjön and several nature reserves. There are extensive beech forests and rolling pastures and fields. The great age of the trees has created an Eldorado for endangered species. There are also plenty of red deer, the Scanian landscape animal. The area around Lake Häckebergasjön and on Romeleåsen offers good outdoor opportunities with hiking, overnight stays and cycling. The Skåneleden trail makes an approximately 25 km long loop in the nature conservation area.

Nature areas around the castle

Several nature reserves spread out around Häckeberga Castle. They are all part of the Häckeberga nature conservation area. The area contains a range of habitat types and all have great natural values.

Old forests

Several of the beech forests in the conservation area are old. The age of the trees is of great importance for species richness. Old and dead trees provide good habitats for many of the forest's bugs, mosses and lichens. Many of the rare beetles are found in the really big trees. It is the lack of old and dead trees in general that makes many of the species here endangered.

Red deer and tree frog

Häckeberga's forests are not only home to lichens, mosses and insects. There are also plenty of fallow deer. The red deer, which is rarer in the area, is also present. However, the species is very shy. Outside the shade of the forests lie the flourishing pastures. In some places there are also wetlands. The leaf frog and the edible frog can be heard playing here in spring.

Outdoor life

The Skåneleden trail (SL2 north to south, stages 14, 15 and 15A) runs through Häckeberga nature conservation area and is the obvious choice if you want to get around the area. Skåneleden can be hiked as a full round of about 25 km. For shorter tours, it is possible to combine parts of this trail with other trails in the area. It is also possible to walk freely through the varied landscape. Parking is available in several places in the area, including along the road north and east of Häckebergasjön. The nearest bus stop is Genarp bus station, which is a few kilometers north.

Häckeberga nature conservation area forms a large part of the outdoor area here on Romeleåsen. More hiking, riding and mountain bike trails await in the nearby reserves. There are also several accommodation options, attractions, a café and restaurant.
