Askersund
Vid Sveriges hemligaste skärgård
From the rocky shores of the Rå uddar nature reserve, there is a magnificent view of Lake Vättern. The sparse pine forests and rocky areas transition inland into an old spruce forest. Thanks to the limestone-rich bedrock, there is a rich fungal flora and many exciting plants in the reserve.
In the nature reserve there are many dead spruces that have fallen or are at risk of falling. The paths are therefore closed until further notice. Visits are at your own risk.
Rugged headlands are part of the unique and distinctive nature along the shores of Lake Vättern. The lake is deep and the beaches are constantly exposed to the forces of wind and waves. The huge body of water has a cooling effect. Along the shores of Lake Vättern you can therefore find both lichens and mosses that otherwise only grow in the mountains.
Protected bays with shallow sandy bottoms are only found here in the northern part of Lake Vättern. The shallow water areas included in the reserve are important nursery grounds for pike and perch, among others. The underwater plants provide shelter for the fry and there is plenty of food in the warm water. The vegetation itself is also interesting. The sandy bottoms are home to, among other things, the rare Elatina hexandra.
Bloodwort, harmynta and gravel fern are some of the plants you can find on Kungsholmen. The entire island is made up of bedrock limestone, which leaves its mark on the flora. King's mint, which is a wild form of oregano, grows here in the only place in Örebro County. Along the shores, the water has carved imaginative patterns in the lightly weathered limestone.
The spruce forest in the reserve has been untouched for a long time and is beginning to resemble a primeval forest. It is uneven-aged with plenty of old trees, dry trees and decaying wood. In spring, wood anemone, spring pea and toothwort bloom in the calcareous strands. In the fall there are plenty of mushrooms. But the dwindling juniper bushes in the forest are a reminder that it has not always looked like it does today. In the past, grazing animals roamed the forest, which was then sparser and more open to light. People probably also cut wood and timber for domestic use.
