Beskrivelse

In the Ängmossetjärnarna nature reserve you will encounter a varied nature and also have the opportunity to see how nature recovers after a forest fire.

Varied forest

Ängsmossetjärnarna is a highland area with older coniferous forest, extensive marshes and several lakes. It is very hilly in places, with boulders lying all over the place. The forest is typical of the high altitudes in the area and varies between sparse pine forest and denser spruce forest. The trees are between 100 and 180 years old, but there are older pines approaching 350 years. On the slopes of Lönnhålsberget in the north, both maple and lime trees grow. The lime tree has heart-shaped leaves and flowers last in the season of all trees, only in July-August.

Pyrenean milas

Just north of the reserve there is a coal pit and a coal hut. The coal bed is around 15 meters in diameter and the ramparts are just over half a meter high. The coal hut is right next to it and the remains of the stove grate are clearly visible. The coal was needed for iron production at, for example, Karlsdals mill.

The forest is burning!

Further south in the reserve there has also been a fire, but much later. In the dry summer of 1994, an area of almost 100 ha was ravaged by fire for almost a week. Mostly young forest fell prey to the flames, but also older forest. In the years that followed the fire, the fireweed bloomed in abundance. The seeds of the fireweed can lie in the soil for at least a hundred years and bide their time until the ground burns again. It needs at least 40-50 degrees of heat to germinate and grows most abundantly where the fire has been the most severe.

Rare skewer

Storm felling and bark beetle infestations have resulted in large amounts of dead wood, not least in spruce forests. This means plenty of food for the three-toed woodpecker, which, especially in winter, feeds mostly on bark beetles. The three-toed woodpecker needs large territories with land such as at Ängstjärnarna - varied natural forest of different ages, fire fields and swamp forest.

Accessibility

Ängsmossetjärnarna belongs to level 1 in the County Administrative Board's leveling of the county's nature reserves, which means that the reserve has a wilderness character and lacks outdoor recreation facilities.
