Suobbatselravinen

Coastal areas often encompass a diversity of natural environments and species. The Suobbatselravinen (Suobbatsel Ravine) is located along the eastern bank of the Stora Lule River, where the water and the sandy, sloping land, which is constantly influenced by the river's flow, have created various forest environments. Many unusual species find their habitat here.

Despite the Suobbatselravinen Nature Reserve being only about 18 hectares in size, there is a great variety of forest types, including spruce forests, pine forests, and deciduous-dominated areas with birch, aspen, willow, and rowan. The pine forest in the northern part grows on sandy soil and has likely developed after a fire 150–200 years ago. In the moist slopes to the south, there are spruce forests, and in the stream valley, there is dense, shady mixed forest.

The long-standing forest continuity in the area, along with its proximity to the river, contributes to high humidity and rich biodiversity. Here, rare species such as the morel, thread-like liverwort, and branch lichen thrive, as well as several wood-dwelling fungi like the pine polypore and the rose polypore.
