This is a legendary site at Kuggaberg in Ljungby, Småland, located in forest and rocky terrain.
It is said that trolls live inside the mountain. On Christmas Eve, the mountain opens and rises, standing on pillars of gold.
Inside, the trolls celebrate their own Christmas, and lights and movement are said to be visible. People avoided the place at such times, believing it dangerous to disturb them.
At the foot of the mountain stands a memorial stone to Mickel of Långhult, a storyteller who passed on these tales.
The site is a clear example of how stories about trolls became tied to natural formations.
It is part of the Land of Legends in Småland (Ljungby, Alvesta and Älmhult), recognized by UNESCO.
The Museum of Legends in Ljungby collects such stories and explains how they are connected to places.
The site is accessible by road or trail and suits short hikes and nature visits.
