In spring, the voices of many birds can be heard in this outpost of Mittlandsskogen. In summer, flowers bloom in the meadows and marshes. In the fall, strange mushrooms emerge from the chalky soil. There is much to experience and discover in Västra Sörby!
You are now in the northwest corner of Mittlandsskogen, a forest with high natural values. The nature reserve also contains calcareous wet meadows and marshes as well as wooded pastures. The varied nature paves the way for a rich plant and animal life. The proximity to Halltorps hage, widely known for its exceptional species richness, will probably lead to even more species appearing in the reserve in the future.
Around a hundred unusual species call Västra Sörby home. Some need dead broadleaf trees, either sunlit or in shade, to survive. Others are found on open calcareous soil, both dry and wet. Many rare fungi can be found because trees have grown here for a long time. The fungi cooperate with the trees. If the trees disappear, so do the fungi.
In Västra Sörby there are many remains that show that the land has been farmed since ancient times. Clearing cairns testify to where farmers had their small fields. They built stone fences to enclose their animals. In total, there are 4000 meters of stone walls in the reserve. Many are overgrown and difficult to spot, but there are also examples of those that are meters high and eye-catching.
