Södviken and Vässby fjärd are home to some of Öland's most beautiful lakes. Here, Ölanders have had animals grazing for thousands of years. The open grasslands and shore meadows, together with the shallow bays, offer perfect habitats for birds. From the platform in the northeastern part of the reserve, you have a great view of the bird-rich landscape!
The vast pastures along the coast of eastern and southwestern Öland are known as Sjömarker. Since the early Iron Age, i.e. for at least 2500 years, the islanders have kept their grazing animals here. The lake lands begin where the cultivated land ends and extend down to the shore of the Baltic Sea.
Land that has been grazed for thousands of years has a special animal and plant life. Grazed coastal meadows are, for example, excellent habitats for various wading birds. They build their nests directly on the ground and have a good view of their surroundings while nesting. And their chicks can easily move around on the short grass. If the grass is too tall, the waders will not nest. Grazing also favors certain plants. For example, plants that need a lot of light or whose seeds prefer to grow in trampled, bare ground. Some thrive best on the shoreline, such as wild clover, coastal arum and sea creeper. In the grasslands above the beaches, you can find mayweed, meadowsweet, snake's tongue and marsh gentian.
Södviken is an internationally renowned bird site. During spring and fall, many migrating waders, geese, terns and swimming ducks stop here. And in summer, a variety of birds such as lapwings, redshanks and greater sandpipers nest here.
