Beskrivelse

Sladö, together with Äskeskär and a large number of smaller islands, forms a nature reserve with a rich flora, open meadows and good opportunities for birdwatching.

Changing archipelago nature

Weather, wind and soil characterize the vegetation in the archipelago. The small skerries at the far end of the archipelago are almost bare, with no large trees or bushes. The islands further into the archipelago are more sheltered and dominated by rocky areas with pine forests. On the larger islands of Sladö and Äskeskär, pine trees also dominate, but the vegetation is more luxuriant next to buildings, with deciduous trees such as oak, ash and lime. These lands have long been used for grazing and haymaking, a tradition that still lives on today.

Flower-rich land

The pastures on Sladö have a rich flora, typical of land that has been managed for a long time. Species such as maidenhair fern, goat's foot, cat's foot, wild strawberry and the orchid Adam and Eve grow here. Äskeskär also has areas with richer flora. On the north-western side of the island, five-fingered herb and hill carnation grow among the pebbles.

Trees that have been killed

On Sladö there are a number of impressive lime trees which, together with a number of ash trees, have been pollarded. By hammering, the farmer made use of the trees' foliage as winter fodder for the cattle. A hammered tree has a tufted, slightly bushy appearance. The old trees are valuable because they tell us about past farming practices. They are also important hosts for lichens, fungi and insects, for example.

Archipelago birds

The reserve's bird life is typical of northern Småland's central and outer archipelago. On the beach meadows you can see red-legged kittiwake, curlew, greater sandpiper and common sandpiper. Further out in the archipelago, eiders and blackbirds nest together with gulls, gulls and terns. Compared to other archipelago islands, there are plenty of nesting birds on Sladö.

Visitor information

On Sladö there are three hake and a circular stone wall that were probably used as sea markers. Another well-known sea mark, dating back several hundred years, is the two ash trees at the far end of the sea on the small islet of Sladö ash.

Near Sladö village is a beautiful collection of earth cellars.

Nice bathing rocks are on Sladö's northeastern cape; Betsudden

Around the eastern part of Sladö there is a hiking trail that connects to Hasselö in the north and in the south to the winter jetty and the southern cape.

There is a public jetty in the bay south of Sladö village.
