Part of this nature reserve was already protected in 1937. At that time, the aim was to preserve the large, untouched agkärret in the north-east. In recent years, the reserve has become larger and now also contains old, valuable coniferous forest.
Feeling of primeval forest
Now you have come to nature that is rare here on Öland - old coniferous forest. The oldest trees in this forest already sprouted in the early 1800s. The fact that the forest has looked after itself for a long time is evident from all the fallen trees. Thick mats of lichen and moss also contribute to the feeling of untouchedness.
Food for many
Old coniferous forest, deciduous swamp forest, hazel-rich forest - the reserve's varied nature offers a well-stocked pantry for birds. Woodpeckers chisel out fat insect larvae from the decaying wood of old trees. Kingfishers, black tits and other small birds feed on spiders, mites and other bugs up among the spruce branches. In the south, where there are plenty of hazel bushes, there is a flurry of activity in the fall when jays, nuthatches and other nut lovers stock up on nuts for the winter.
Botanical gem
We can thank Öland's limestone-rich bedrock for the diversity of plants found on the island. Most famous are probably all the different orchids. Here in Sjöstorp, for example, forest knotweed and white forest lily grow. Other plants that you may come across during your walk are ferns, wood anemone and eye pyrola.
Protected but gnawed
The eastern part of the reserve was established back in 1937. The purpose was to protect one of Öland's few undiked agkärr. But the marsh was drained in the 1950s, like many other marshes on Öland, to create more arable land. Today, about a fifth of the marsh's former size remains.

About 1 km southwest of Grankullavik. From Böda drive north and turn towards Grankullavik. In the village of Mickelsmad, turn left onto a forest road. After 2 km, the reserve is located along the road on the right side. There are no prepared paths or trails and the wetland makes it sometimes difficult to get around in the reserve.
Forskrifter
In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- Drive any vehicle.
- ride a horse
- camp.
- Make a fire.
- Bringing a dog or other animal that is not on a leash.
- Put up any board, sign, poster or similar device or make inscriptions.
- Damage or remove trees, stumps, bark, branches, shrubs or brush that are growing or dead.
- Digging, pulling up or picking plants or plant parts. You may pick berries and edible mushrooms.
- Climbing trees with nests.
- Deliberately disturb wildlife.
- Use the area for competitions or exercises.
- Carry out commercial activities.
After consultation with the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Conduct survey or research.
Full regulations
C. Regulations under 10 4 of the Nature Conservation Act on what the public must observe within the reserve.
In addition to prohibitions and regulations in other legislation, it is prohibited to:
- drive any kind of vehicle
- riding horses
- camping
- make fires
- bring an unleashed dog or other stray pet,
- put up a board, sign, poster or similar device or make an inscription
- damage or remove growing or dead trees, stumps, bark, branches, bushes or brushwood
- digging up or picking plants or parts of plants except berries and edible mushrooms
- climbing trees or otherwise disturbing wildlife
- use the area for competition or training purposes
- conduct commercial activities.
Surveys or research must be carried out in consultation with the County Administrative Board.
