Beskrivelse

The Ryd reserve protects a broadleaf forest with high natural values. The forest is part of Mittlandsskogen, which is southern Sweden's largest contiguous deciduous forest. The reserve also contains many well-preserved remains from the Iron Age.

From open to closed

Ryd is a typical example of Mittland's broadleaf forests that have grown up on former meadows and pastures when the cultivation ceased. Oak, ash, elm and willow are examples of tree species that have sprouted in the rich soils. In recent years, the forest has been hit hard by Dutch elm disease and ash dieback. Almost all the elm and ash trees in the area have been wiped out.

Lichen and fungi

The reserve's broadleaf forests are home to many unusual species that do not thrive in modern forests. Rarities such as brown lichen, large bud lichen and pink lichen grow on the rough bark of the old trees. The trees are also home to fungi such as thorny toadflax, leathery toadflax and cinnamon leather - signal species that indicate forests with high natural values.

Exciting flora

Ryd's broadleaf forests are home to a rich flora. Typical grove plants such as toothwort and spring pea grow in the lime-rich soil. Among the reserve's rarer plants are the desm bud and the lesser celandine.

Traces from the past

As you wander around the terrain, you may see house foundations, cairns and old enclosures. These well-preserved remains date from the Middle Iron Age. Complex ancient remains with farms and villages are unique to Öland, even in an international perspective.
