Handlinger
Beskrivelse
Large, flat sandstone outcrops with older pine forests, an archipelago with rich bird life and cultural remains from ancient times - there is much to discover in the reserve outside Påskallavik! Several walking trails lead across the main island, through the forest down to the water.
Similar to the island's alvar
Flat areas of sandstone spread out over large parts of Runnö. The alvar-like landscape is reminiscent of Öland, something that Carl Linnaeus already noted when he visited here. Along the entire Swedish coast, it is only on Runnö and two other islands that you can see sandstone in this way. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed when sand is packed together under high pressure. Runnö's sandstone was formed around 600-500 million years ago, during the Cambrian geological period.
Valuable forest
Runnö is dominated by pine, but some oak also grows here. The islanders have gathered firewood and construction timber from the forest and it has been used for forest grazing. After a half-century-long break, cattle are now grazing parts of the forest again. This environment, combined with a warm and sunny climate, suits a number of exclusive beetles, such as the brown sponge beetle, the golden runner and the black sponge beetle.
Rich in relics from the past
People were already making their way out here to Runnö in ancient times. This is revealed by all the ancient remains on the island. Here, for example, you will find the largest group of empty buildings along the entire Kalmar Strait. These low stone houses with simple superstructures were used for seasonal fishing. Other examples of remains are stone walls, burial cairns and boat moorings (older boat moorings).
Multi-taskers
Runnö has had a permanent population since at least the Middle Ages. The islanders made their living mainly from fishing and livestock farming, but also from small-scale agriculture. Seabirds and seals were hunted at certain times of the year.
The islands of Lövgrund, Långgrund and Runnö Rödskär are specially protected and access is prohibited from April 1 to July 10.
