Beskrivelse

Mittlandsskogen is widely known for its rich plant and animal life, but also for its many ancient remains from the Iron Age. Here in Övetorp you get a taste of all this! Deciduous forest dominates the reserve, but there are also flower-rich pastures and small alvars.

Outdoor museum

Ölänningar have lived and worked for thousands of years in this place. They have cultivated fields, cut meadows and grazed animals. Stone lines show how Iron Age farmers divided up the land. There is also a trackway here, on which cattle were herded between the home and the pastures. In fact, the flowers of the open fields are also a cultural heritage. Adapted to regular mowing and grazing, they bear witness to many generations of land use.

Valuable broadleaf forest

Mittlandsskogen is a mosaic of broadleaf forest, hazel groves, small glades and wetlands. The forest grew up when the cultivated land was abandoned in the 1900s. The older deciduous trees here are reminiscent of former wooded meadows and pastures.

Voices of the forest

In spring, the forest is a hive of activity as collared flycatchers, blackcaps, tits and many other small birds find a mate and build a nest. Then the forest is filled with birdsong wherever you turn. Drumming woodpeckers and hooting wood pigeons also contribute to the spring concert.

Rich in flowers

You can see many unusual flowers in Övetorp's open fields. Flockarun, back thyme, mayviva and the orchids bride's spurge, tansy and meadowsweet are just a few examples. There is also much to discover in the forest before the canopy closes in the summer. Toothwort, cranesbill, ferns, soapwort and many more grow here.
