Handlinger

Beskrivelse

It protects forests and pastures with old trees, flowing rivers and lakes. Unusual plants and animals live both in the water and on land. You may come across some of them during your visit!

Old deciduous forest

Ölvedal's wooded pastures and deciduous forests are dominated by oak, but there are also plenty of other deciduous trees such as lime, maple and ash. Some of the trees are several hundred years old. There are also plenty of dead deciduous trees in the forest. Rare species such as coral tick, candelabra fungus and coral tag fungus grow on the decaying wood.

Hidden treasures of the bark

As you walk through Ölvedal, you will occasionally come across old broad-leaved trees. If you look closely at the rough bark, a mosaic of lichens appears. Here and there, barely millimeter-high needle lichens grow. It's easy to see why the magnifying glass is the lichen expert's main tool! The nature reserve is home to several lichens that only thrive on old deciduous trees, which grow in an environment that has been a deciduous forest for generations.

Protected water system

The aquatic environments in the reserve are part of the Natura 2000 area Stora Ramm and Marströmmen. The area is home to many different species of bugs associated with bottom environments. There are also 15 different fish species. One of these is the sea lamprey. It lives in seclusion, which means that it is rarely seen. But with special inventory methods, it can be found!
