Mörbylånga kommun - Öland
Välkommen till vårt fantastiska friluftsliv i v...
One of the largest alvar reserves on Stora Alvaret. Here, open grazed alvar alternates with toad fields, wetlands and tree curtains. From the heights in the northern part of the reserve you can look out over the vast alvar. The calcareous soils have been grazed for millennia, which has led to a distinctive plant and animal life. So walk slowly, there is much to discover here!
The alvar has a very special flora. Some of the species that grow here are actually native to the tundra in the mountains, such as wormwood, snow lichen and mountain carnation. Others originate from warmer latitudes, such as woolly daffodil, sulphur lichen and goldenrod. And then there are those that only grow on the alvar, such as island sunflower and alvar wormwood.
For those interested in birds, a visit to the marshes in the eastern part of the reserve is recommended. Here you have the chance to see various waders during spring and early summer. Characteristic species include the ringed plover, snipe, lapwing and redshank. Less common is the red-breasted godwit, a fastidious bird that only nests in the wet meadows if they are kept open by mowing or grazing.
In the south is one of Öland's best preserved Iron Age landscapes. Almost 2000 years ago, one of the largest settlements on Stora Alvar emerged here. Remains can still be seen today, in the form of kilometers-long stone strings, some 30 house foundations and low burial mounds. The stone walls line the small marshes, among other things. These fences kept out the grazing animals, as the marshes were harvested for sedges and herbs used as winter feed for the animals.
