Målilla sanatorium

The sanatorium was opened in 1915 and was soon named 'Castle in the Forest' by the locals. Over the years, several thousand people have been treated for tuberculosis at the sanatorium. In the 1930s, there were at most 300 patients in the sanatorium at any one time. The last patient was treated there in 1973. A museum on the top floor shows what life was like in the restricted sanatorium area and how patients were treated.
