Littorinas stenar

**When the ice sheet began to melt around 8 000 BC, the water level rose and the Baltic Sea, which was originally a freshwater lake, flooded and was given the less familiar name of the Littorina Sea.

Around 500 years BC, the sea extended well up onto what we now call land. The rocks, which we call Littorina rocks, were ground and rounded underwater by the friction of wave action. Today, they are spread out over a large area like a big stone square.

Depending on where you stand in the shingle field, the size of the stones varies. At first the stones are very small and polished, probably where the sea edge once was, and the further away you go, the larger and more uneven the stones, probably due to a greater depth.

The boulder field is located at Hornåsen, west of Hästhagssjön on Hornslandet in Västervik.
