Lilla Vickleby lund nature reserve consists of two groves of hazel-rich oak forest. There is a rich plant and animal life with several unusual plants, fungi and insects. In the reserve, a research project is underway to study biodiversity in overgrown meadows and pastures.
The past...
What is now a nature reserve was once farmland for the village of Lilla Vickleby. In the 18th century, farmers walked with scythes and harvested hay from the lush fields. During the late 18th and 19th centuries the area was grazed.
...and the present
Since grazing ceased, the land has grown back into more or less enclosed groves. Broad-crowned oaks that grew up when the area was more open are now surrounded by trees and shrubs. The southern part has been prepared for grazing again.
Valuable insect fauna
Several unusual butterflies and beetles have been observed in the reserve. Among the butterflies, the rust-colored leaf spinner and the liverwort meadow fly can be mentioned. Rare beetles include the ornamental beetle, which is associated with hazel, and the oak borer, which lives on oak.
Interesting lichens and fungi
Many different lichens grow on the old deciduous trees in the groves. One example is the pink lichen. It is characterized by approximately 1.5 mm wide, sharp fruiting bodies on a gray-green abdomen. A variety of fungi also thrive in the groves. The knotty root truffle and the very rare grove smoke fungus are two examples.

The two areas are located SW of Vickleby church and parking is available along the road between Vickleby and Stora Frö.
Forskrifter
In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- Drive a motorized vehicle off designated roads or trails.
- Park a motor vehicle, caravan or trailer.
- Camp in tents.
- Ride horses, drive horses and carriages or similar outside designated roads or paths outside grazing land.
- Bring a dog or other animal that is not on a leash.
- Put up a board, sign, poster or similar device or make inscriptions.
- Build a fire.
- Digging or pulling up plants or plant parts by the roots. You can pick berries and mushrooms
- Damage or remove trees, stumps, bark, branches, bushes or reeds that are growing or dead.
After consultation with the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Conduct survey or research.
- Carry out commercial activities.
Full regulations
C. Regulations under Section 10 of the Nature Conservation Act on what the public must observe within the reserve.
In addition to what otherwise applies, it is prohibited to:
- drive any kind of vehicle other than on existing roads
- set up a caravan, motorhome or trailer
- camping
- riding or driving horse-drawn vehicles other than on existing roads
- Bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet.
- erecting a board, sign, poster or similar device or making an inscription
- Make a fire.
- Digging up, picking or damaging plants or parts of plants, with the exception of berries and edible mushrooms for domestic use.
- Damage or remove growing or dead trees, stumps, bark, branches, bushes or brushwood.
- conduct surveys or research without consulting the county administrative board
- carry out commercial activities.
