Flowery
A plethora of herbs grow on the calcareous dry meadows of the alvar. Characteristic species include big fat bud, cat's foot and goat's foot. The latter looks a bit special here on the alvar. The flower color varies from light yellow, via orange to purple and it is more low-growing.
Toadflax
Toadflax spreads along the reserve's streams. Tok is a meter high shrub with yellow flowers. "Tok is called on Öland a shrub, which in the whole world is very rare". So writes Linnaeus in his Carl Linnaeus' journey to Öland and Gotland in 1741. In Europe, the toad only occurs in the wild on Öland, Gotland and in a few places in Estonia. And only here, on southern Öland, does it occur in large quantities.
Houses, bridges and huts
There are several interesting remains in the reserve. In the southeast there are two beautifully arched limestone bridges. West of Övrebäcken are the remains of a house foundation from the Iron Age. You can still see the walls and ramparts! In the middle of the alvar are some shepherd's huts. In the huts, the shepherds sat protected from the weather when they watched over the grazing sheep.
The legend of the name
Kvinnsgröta is said to have been named after the women of the village gave a group of Danish soldiers so much porridge that they fell asleep. Their men, who were hiding outside the village, could then easily cut the Danes' throats.

Veibeskrivelse
The reserve is located just northwest of the village of Kvinnsgröta on southeastern Öland. Follow road 136 south towards Ottenby. Turn off at Södra Möckleby and cross Stora Alvaret in the direction of Torngård. Continue south along the eastern highway (road 137). Turn towards the village of Kvinnsgröta about 2 km south of Torngård. Once in Kvinnsgröta, follow the village street north. In the far north there is a parking lot on the north side of the last farm in the village. The reserve is bordered to the north by the Mellstaby alvar nature reserve.
Forskrifter
In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- Drive a motorized vehicle off designated roads or trails.
- Park a vehicle, caravan or trailer in a place other than designated parking spaces.
- Camping more than one night in the same place.
- Bring a dog or other animal that is not on a leash.
- Hunting, killing, capturing or harming wild mammals, amphibians, reptiles or birds.
- Remove or damage eggs or nests.
- Deliberately disturbing wildlife.
- Collect loose rocks or remove pieces of bedrock.
- Damage or remove trees, shrubs, mosses and lichens that are growing or dead.
- Use the area for orienteering competitions or training.
- Damaging fencing (for example, fences or barriers).
- Using the area for military exercises.
Full regulations
C. Regulations for the public according to Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code on the right to travel and stay in the reserve and on order in general within the reserve.
Within the nature reserve it is not allowed to:
- drive motorized vehicles other than on specially designated roads and places
- set up motor vehicles or caravans other than in specially designated places
- camp more than one night in the same place
- bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet
- hunt, kill, capture or injure wild mammals, amphibians, reptiles or birds, remove or damage eggs or nests or otherwise disturb wildlife
- collect loose rocks or remove pieces of bedrock
- damaging or removing growing or dead trees, shrubs, mosses and lichens
- organizing orienteering competitions or training for them
- damage fences
- use the area for military exercises.
