Mörbylånga kommun - Öland
Välkommen till vårt fantastiska friluftsliv i v...
Konungsbacken is part of Mittlandsskogen - one of Northern Europe's largest and most species-rich deciduous forest areas. The nature reserve is unusually rich in the rare creeping elm, which has one of its strongest strongholds in the country in Konungsbacken.
Öland is the only place in the country where the willowherb grows wild. And here in Konungsbacken it is found in unusually large quantities. Forest elm and grove elm also grow in the reserve. Unlike these, the willow elm has shallow roots that over time grow into plank roots - winding, flattened roots on edge.
The land in the nature reserve was once divided between the villages of Kalkstad and Skogsby. The wall marking the border between the villages can still be seen today. The villagers used scythes to harvest hay from large parts of the area, which was more open than today. The hay was used as winter feed for the cattle. Farmers also grazed their animals in the forest in summer. Some parts of the reserve are still grazed today.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the 1000-year-old tradition of haymaking and grazing came to an end. Since then, trees and shrubs have taken their place and grown into the forest that now dominates large parts of the reserve. But even though it was open in the past, deciduous trees have been growing on Konungsbacken for a long time. The sparse oaks you will see here and there are reminders of the era when the landscape was more open.
Konungsbacken is rich in plants and animals. Long-legged frogs play in the wetlands, and the old or dead trees are home to the lesser oak beetle and other rare beetles. In spring and summer, you can see unusual plants such as woodruff, wild violet and bluebells. And in the fall, strange mushrooms appear!
