Mörbylånga kommun - Öland
Välkommen till vårt fantastiska friluftsliv i v...
At Klinta-Stora Smedby alvar you can experience the extraordinary beauty of Stora alvar. From Storåsen you have a fine view of the barren landscape. On a hike in the alvar fields, you can see both rare herbs and interesting ancient remains.
Storåsen is a ridge that runs from north to south. The ridge was the first thing to appear on Öland when the Baltic ice lake receded about 12,000 years ago. Despite its name, the ridge is only 1 meter high. Yet from its summit you are treated to an outstanding view of the vast, flat alvar. On a clear day, you can even see from the east coast of Öland to the west coast!
Storåsen has a damming effect and thus controls some of the Alvar's water flows. This in turn leads to it being dry east of the ridge and damp on the west side. East of the ridge, therefore, rocky areas and gravel alvars with very thin soils dominate, while the west side is characterized by a string of wetlands, marshes and wet meadows.
Along Storåsen there are fine, herb-rich grasslands. Typical plants for these alpine dry meadows are soapwort, maidenhair fern, island sunflower, meadow oats and axveronica. The southern parts of the reserve also offer beautiful dry meadows. In early summer, the orchids Adam and Eve, Saint Peter's keys, St. John's keys and gunpowder burnet provide the floral splendor. Endangered flowers Many unusual herbs grow on Klinta-Stora Smedby alvar. Goldthorn has characteristic needle-like leaves strewn along the stem. It only grows on alvar land on Öland and Gotland. The rare topmint thrives on sun-open, calcareous soil. One of the rarest plants in the area is the forked dragonfly. It is only known from Sweden, and only grows on Öland's Stora Alvar and on northern Gotland.
There are several exciting ancient remains in the area. The oldest are from the early Iron Age and are about 2000 years old. In the south there are large boulders with carved pits - fairy mill blocks. These blocks were once thought to have a magical function. For example, they could help you get rid of corns and warts!
