Mittlandsskogen is widely known for its rich plant and animal life, but also for its many ancient remains from the Iron Age. Here in Karås you get a taste of all this! Hike along a lane, where Iron Age farmers' cattle trampled through thousands of years ago. Enjoy the many beautiful flowers of the deciduous forest and the spring concert of small birds. In the small marshes you have the chance to see the long-legged frog!
Outdoor museum
Do you want to feel the wings of history? Then walk up to the north-eastern corner of the reserve. Around 2000 years ago, Iron Age farmers lived here. The foundations of their houses are still there. And rows of stones show how they divided up the land. It is also possible to see a fenceline, where cattle were herded between the home and the pastures. Nature has embedded the old settlement with its greenery, so it takes a little patience to find the remains!
Valuable deciduous forest
In few places in Europe can you experience deciduous forests like those in Mittlandsskogen. But this is no virgin wilderness. The land has been farmed for thousands of years, but it is only in the 20th century that the forest has really spread. The old deciduous trees in the forest grew up when the land was still open. The glades and verges are also remnants of the cultivation era. The history of the land is one of the clues to why the Mittlands Forest is so rich in species. Plus, there are many different species of trees and shrubs. And last but not least, the limestone-rich soil.

Follow the directions to Karum, the parking lot is the same for visitors to Karås. Within Karås there are no other marked trails apart from Mittlandsleden which runs through the reserve. The best connection is at Noaks Ark in the Karum nature reserve.
Forskrifter
In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- Drive any vehicle.
- Set up a motorhome, caravan or similar.
- Camp for more than one day in the same place.
- Make a fire.
- Bringing a dog or other animal that is not on a leash.
- Putting up a board, sign, poster or similar device or making inscriptions.
- Digging or pulling up plants or plant parts by the roots.
- Damage or remove trees, stumps, bark, branches, shrubs or brush that are growing or dead.
- Picking or damaging wood fungi, mosses or lichens.
If you have obtained a permit from the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Use the area for competitions or exercises.
After consultation with the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Carry out commercial activities.
- Conduct surveys or research.

C. Regulations according to Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code on the right to travel and stay in the reserve and on order in general.
It is forbidden to enter the reserve:
- drive any kind of vehicle.
- Set up a caravan, motorhome or similar.
- Camping for more than one day in the same place.
- Make a fire.
- Bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet.
- Put up a board, sign, poster or similar device or make an inscription.
- Digging up or pulling up plants by the roots.
- Damage or remove growing or dead trees, stumps, bark, branches, bushes or brush.
- Pick or damage wood fungi, mosses or lichens.
- Without the permission of the County Administrative Board, use the area for competition or training purposes.
- Without consultation with the County Administrative Board, lease or use the area for commercial use of the right of public access.
- Without consultation with the County Administrative Board, conduct surveys or research.
