Mörbylånga kommun - Öland
Välkommen till vårt fantastiska friluftsliv i v...
Kalkstad is one of the many interesting environments in Mittlandsskog. The broadleaf forest is botanically rich and in the northeast there are remains of Iron Age settlements. One of the rarities of the nature reserve is the willow. Öland is the only place in the whole country where the willow palm grows wild.
In Kalkstads, deciduous forest spreads out. Forest that has been left untouched for a long time can be found in the western and southern parts. Oak and hazel dominate here, and ivy climbs up the tree trunks. The forest takes care of itself; when the trees die and fall to the ground, sunlit glades are created, in which new trees can sprout. The dead wood remains for a long time before it decays and turns into soil.
In the rich soils of broadleaf forests, vegetation flourishes. The spring flowers spring pea and lesser celandine are both pea plants, the latter can grow almost a meter high. Dark lungwort can be seen in May-June. It belongs to the family of rough-leaved plants - feel the leaves and you'll understand why! Ivy, which is green all year round, wraps itself around the trunks of trees by means of taproots on the young shoots.
In the north-eastern part of the nature reserve there are several ancient remains. Here you can see the foundations of old houses and stone walls. Stone walls are the remains of enclosure walls. The function of the walls was to exclude grazing animals from harvest fields or simply to mark a boundary. Many of Mittlandet's broadleaf forests grow on land that until the beginning of the 20th century was grazing and haymaking land.
